Metcalf collects 700th career win with dominant showing over Herrin

The Vienna Girls Basketball team dominated Herrin 70-34 on Monday night.  The victory improved the Lady Eagles to 14-2 on the season but was just as big in the career of head coach Rick Metcalf – it was his 700th career victory.

The win was the first for Vienna after suffering two straight losses at the Benton Rangerette Christmas Classic after starting the year 13-0.

Metcalf has had a storied career across Southern Illinois high school basketball.  He began his career at Joppa, coaching the boys from 1984 to 1986.  He put together an 18-17 record there before going to the college ranks to coach at both Kaskaskia and Murray State for a time.

Metcalf returned to the high school realm in 1990 and hasn’t left since.  He has coached the boys and girls programs of both Sesser-Valier and Vienna the past 25 years.

From 1990 to 2004, Metcalf coached the Sesser-Valier boys to a 307-109 record.  He then took over the Vienna Boys from 2004 to 2008, accumulating a record of 89-30.  In 2011, Metcalf took over the Sesser-Valier Girls program and put together a 195-33 record until he stepped down in 2019.  Metcalf has been head coach of the Vienna Girls since 2020 and put together a record of 89-36 so far with the Lady Eagles.

His career record is 700-225.
