ST. LOUIS, Mo. – For the first time this season, Southern Illinois University softball’s McKenzie Newcomb has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday.
Newcomb went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in Southern’s three-game sweep of Illinois State this past weekend. The senior allowed six hits, no runs, one walk, and had 15 strikeouts across 10.2 innings pitched.
In the three outings, Newcomb had an opposing batting average of .158.
The right-handed pitcher has been dominant in the circle as of late for SIU. Over her last six appearances, Newcomb has a 0.53 ERA in 26.1 innings pitched. The veteran has allowed two earned runs during this stretch.
On the season, Newcomb is 8-5 with a 1.84 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and has 70 strikeouts in 16 appearances, three starts, and 64.2 innings pitched. The senior is third in the Valley in ERA and second in strikeouts.
Newcomb has received weekly accolades from the Valley once already this season, as the senior was named the MVC Newcomer of the Week last Tuesday after the Saluki Invitational.
Southern (11-14, 3-0) will be back in action tonight at home against Missouri State, with first pitch scheduled for around 5 p.m.
