ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Jackie Lis and McKenzie Newcomb of the Southern Illinois University softball team have earned a pair of weekly awards from the Missouri Valley Conference, as announced by the league on Monday.
Lis was named the MVC Player of the Week for the third time this season, while Newcomb received MVC Pitcher of the Week honors for the third time as well.
The junior shortstop went 7-for-10 (.700) with a home run, five RBI, four runs scored, and four walks in Southern Illinois’ four-game week vs. UT Martin and Murray State. Lis finished the week with a slugging percentage of 1.100 and an on-base percentage of .786.
Lis last received Player of the Week honors on March 24 after Southern’s games against Missouri State and Valparaiso.
Newcomb earned Pitcher of the Week after going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two appearances this past week. The senior allowed seven hits, one run (zero earned), two walks, with 11 strikeouts in 10.2 innings pitched. Opponents had a batting average of just .179 against the veteran pitcher.
The senior last received the award on April 14 after SIU’s week against Missouri State, Missouri, and Bradley.
Southern Illinois will conclude the regular season this weekend at Evansville, starting on Friday at 5 p.m.
