First Round IHSA Football Roundup: Scores and Second Round matchups

The first round of the IHSA Football Playoffs has come to a close for all area teams.  Here’s a look at the final scores and the second round matchups for area teams that advanced:

 

1A:

#7 Sesser-Valier wins over #10 Red Hill 30-6

The Red Devils steadily score throughout the game to defeat their future Black Diamond compatriot.  The Salukis’ season ends with a 6-4 record.

Next: #7 Sesser-Valier (8-2) travels to #2 Hardin Calhoun (9-1) Saturday November 9, 2pm

 

2A:

#1 Johnston City defeats #16 Red Bud 46-13

The Indians overcome a slow start to trounce the Musketeers.  Red Bud wraps up the year with a 5-5 record.

Next: #1 Johnston City (9-1) hosts #8 Warrensburg-Latham (8-2) Saturday November 9, 5pm

 

#7 Chester wins over #10 Westville 40-35

The Yellow Jackets hold off a late surging Tigers team to move on to the second round.

Next: #7 Chester (9-1) heads to #2 Maroa-Forsyth (9-1) Saturday November 9, 2:30pm

 

#3 Quincy Notre Dame defeats #14 Flora 49-6

The Wolves score late to prevent a shutout.  Flora finishes 6-4.

 

#8 Warrensburg-Latham overcomes #9 Carmi-White County 35-30

The Bulldogs fight to the end but suffer a loss in the first round, bringing an end to Kurt Simon’s 27-year career as Carmi-White County coach.  The Bulldogs finish with a 7-3 record.

 

 

3A:

#4 Nashville defeats #13 Olympia 42-35

The Hornets get the last laugh in an offensively explosive fourth quarter to advance.

Next: #4 Nashville (9-1) hosts #5 Greenville (9-1) Saturday November 9, 1pm

 

#10 Benton crushes #7 New Berlin 48-7

The Benton Rangers’ run defense proves to be too much for the run-first Pretzels.

Next: #10 Benton (7-3) hosts #2 Sullivan-Okaw Valley (10-0) Saturday November 9, 4pm

 

#1 St. Joseph-Ogden shuts out #16 West Frankfort 48-0

The young core of the Redbirds are steamrolled by the Trojans.  West Frankfort wraps up the season 5-5.

 

#6 Monticello defeats #11 Du Quoin 49-20

The duo of Johnathan Brown and Triston Webb can’t overpower the Sages.  Du Quoin finishes with a record of 6-4.

Murphysboro Red Devils

#5 Greenville wins the rematch with #12 Fairfield 48-6

The Mules fall to Greenville for the second year in a row.  They finish with a record of 6-4.

 

#2 Sullivan-Okaw Valley defeats #15 Mt. Carmel 32-6

The Golden Aces are unable to recapture last year’s magic and fall in the first round.  They finish with a record of 5-5.

 

#9 Tolono Unity defeats #8 Roxana 44-31

The Rockets keep their tradition of postseason dominance alive with a win over the Shells.  Roxana wraps up a 7-3 season.

 

4A:

#9 Murphysboro defeats #9 Macomb 56-33

The Red Devils pick up their third win over the Bombers in the past four postseasons behind a 6-touchdown day from running back Tyjaire Kellum – tying Murphysboro’s single-postseason-game record for rushing touchdowns.

Next: #9 Murphysboro (8-2) hosts #1 Breese Central (10-0) Saturday November 9, 3pm

 

#2 Richland County defeats #15 Kewanee 41-14

The Tigers keep their huge turnaround going with a dominant win over the Boilermakers.

Next: #2 Richland County (10-0) plays at #10 Normal (University) (8-2) Saturday November 9, 4pm

 

#12 Mt. Zion defeats Carterville 42-21

The Braves jump the Lions early Friday night and keep a three score lead the rest of the way.  The Lions finish 7-3.

 

#1 Breese Central defeats #16 Harrisburg 42-7

The Bulldogs struggle to keep up with 4A’s top-ranked team throughout Saturday afternoon.  The Bulldogs finish 5-5.

 

5A:

#5 Highland wins over #12 Marion 55-19

The Wildcats struggled to keep up with the high-powered offense of Highland, finishing the year 6-4.

 

#9 Metamore wins over #8 Centralia 23-9

The Orphans lead a majority of the game but the Redbirds’ playoff experience shines through in a come-from-behind win in the fourth quarter.  The freshmen-led Orphans finish 6-4.
