Following in his father’s footsteps: Hawkins commits to SIU

John A. Logan College point guard Caden Hawkins made a bit of a shocking commitment Friday afternoon when he announced he is committing to SIU.  Hawkins had posted about offers from other schools on social media but not from SIU.

The Carterville native is the first new commitment to SIU this offseason.  He is the son of Carterville boys’ basketball coach Shane Hawkins, who starred for SIU in the ’90s.

This past season, Hawkins averaged 7.9 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 4.1 assists for the Vols.  He averaged 46.7% from the field and 42.0% from beyond the three-point line – the 36th best percentage in NJCAA Division I basketball.  He also shot 87.0% from the free throw line – the 8th best percentage in the nation.

Hawkins was viewed as a top JUCO prospect following his freshman season, receiving an invite to the All-American JUCO Showcase last July.

Hawkins also received offers from Southern Indiana, Western Illinois, Eastern Illinois, and UIndy.
